Step Up Hub delivers parenting programs such as Strengthening Families Strengthening Communities (SFSC) to support Brent parents and their children to overcome some of the problems identified by our service users, such as anti-social behaviour, at risk of exclusion, low levels of attainment in school, gang involvement, or not in education, training or employment.
Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities parent programme (SFSC) is a universal programme, extensively used to reach, retain and impact on black and minority ethnic parents and marginalised communities, including fathers. Parents of children aged three to 18 are empowered to develop a better understanding of child development, use positive discipline techniques, promote children’s social skills and self-discipline.
Interactive learning methods are used including parents’ sharing their experiences and their values. Practical activities are undertaken and are built on through homework. Parent manuals are available in 12 languages, Braille, and large print.
SFSC draws on social learning theory and behavioural theories. For each program we run, Step Up Hub provides two trained facilitators to deliver the programme to groups of parents in three-hourly sessions, over 13 weeks. Every year over 100 parents in Brent completed SFSC courses and we receive an excellent feedback from those who finish the course.
